It does not include The Participant’s exact wording but summarizes the information they are willing to disclose. \n\nContext of the Entry \nThe Participant is a 20- 25-year-old Haratine man. He primarily discusses the details of his enslavement and his escape. He was born in Mauritania.\n\nDescription of experiences disclosed \nThe participant was born in Nouakchott. His family originally came from the south (Brakna Region). When the participant was three months old, he was transported to the south. When he was eight years old, he learned that he and his family were enslaved by a Bidan master. The participant described his master as a very rich man with many slaves. When the participant turned ten, he was ordered by his master to herd sheep in the desert. The participant would leave before sunrise and return at sunset. The participant described feeling afraid while herding the flock alone in the desert, however, if he complained, his master would bind him with rope and lash him with a whip to force him to graze the flock. The participant stated that neither his family or anyone else could protect him from the fear, danger, and torture his master inflicted upon him. The participant claimed that his master would beat any slave mercilessly to compel them to do his bidding.\n\n\tThe participant never received a rest day or holiday, even during religious festivals. One time, the participant was playing with other children after returning from the fields, the next day his master seized the participant from his hut, then bound and whipped him saying that the participant was not allowed to play with other children because he must always wake up early and be alert to herd the sheep. The whole time the participant was being tortured by his master, the participant screamed and cried for help and told his master that he had done nothing wrong.\n\n\tWhile enslaved, the participant knew no one else besides his master, his family, and one other slave. The participant stated that this slave had desired to escape, however, he does not know what happened to him. He does not remember the work his other family members did.\n\n\tThe participant did not know many details about the work female slaves performed, however, he stated that usually women are assigned to household work such as cooking, cleaning, refilling water, while men do farming and pastoral work. He added that women are usually sexually abused whenever the master wants and that women often have mixed children with the master but these children are also slaves.\n\tWhen the participant was eleven years old, his father disappeared and escaped to an unknown location. To this day the participant does not know where his father went or what happened to him. When his Master learned of the participant’s father’s escape, he bound and whipped the participant’s entire family and vowed to torture the participant’s father to death as an example to the other slaves. After hours of torture from his Master, the participant and his siblings were released, however, his Master ordered that his mother remained tied outside the hut and that she be denied food and water for two days.\n\nHis Master then ordered another Bidan man, one of his family members, to take his father’s place and wake him up in the morning. The participant described himself and other slaves being beaten by this man if they did not wake up early enough.\n\nThe participant remained a slave until his early twenties. Over that time, the participant heard that his master had beaten and tortured several people to death for being slow at work, one of these people was a sick man who was unable to work. His Master did not provide medical care for this sick slave, instead he tortured him to death. The participant did not know how escaped slaves were tortured or killed by his Master, however, he stated that he had witnessed his Master, his brothers, and his friends kill three people in front of him. He clarified that his Master often got his brothers and friends to do the punishment.\n\nA few years ago, the participant returned from the fields to find that some of his family had escaped in an unknown direction due to the torture, abuse and persecution they faced as slaves. That night, the participant also escaped with another man, although the participant does not know what happened to this man. After two days of walking, the participant found another village in the Brakna region. There, the participant took refuge with a village elder named Sheikh and told him his story. The participant stayed with Sheikh for one year before fleeing Mauritania. During this time he worked on Sheikh’s farm and learned how to read and write as well as basic arithmetic at a school in the village that Sheikh enrolled him in. The participant does not recall any details about this village or its school. The participant also knows nothing about Sheikh  other than the fact that he was the man who helped him, and that Sheikh claimed to have helped many other slaves. It is unknown if Sheikh  was a member of any anti-slavery organizations such as SOS-Esclaves or the IRA.\n\nSome months later, the participant said that men sent by his master came to the village looking for him. These men had heard from other people that the participant was under Sheikh’s care. The men said that they were here to drag the participant back to hims master so he could be beaten and tortured to death as an example to other slaves. Sheikh kept the participant hidden. The participant elaborated that his master is so rich and powerful that he can kill anyone and get away with it, anything he can do he can get away with. He claims that all masters are so rich and powerful that they can kill anyone and do anything. Because of this the participant had to leave Mauritania, he stated that no matter where he went in the country, he would be found and killed.\n\nAfter the men left, Sheikh used his network of contacts to expedite a passport and documents for the participant so he could flee to the United States, a place where he could be free from slavery and his Master’s men. Sheikh gathered and borrowed money to give the participant. \n\nSheikh booked the participant a flight to Nicaragua, from there the participant traveled to Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico. In Mexico the participant was kidnapped by a gang and held hostage. He did not memorize any phone numbers, so he could call no one for help. He paid to be released. The participant finally reached the United States border and scaled the fence before surrendering himself to U.S. police and requesting asylum. \n\nThe participant no longer has contact with anyone in Mauritania. He said that he came to the United States of America because it is a country where slavery does not exist and its people would protect him from persecution and death by torture. In his asylum statement he appealed to the American people as “guardians of human rights principles”. After being taken in by police he felt “overwhelming sense of relief and security, knowing that I was finally safe—no more torture, no more threats of death. At that moment, I felt like a truly free human being”. He doesn’t want to contact anybody. \nAsylum Statement\nThe statement below was written by The Participant who agreed to share it with H.I.D.E and gave permission for its publication. This document has been edited by H.I.D.E. Specific locations, dates, and names have been omitted for anonymity. The name of the Participant's master has been kept anonymous by H.I.D.E..\n\nI was born in the village of [...]on [...], in Mauritania, and grew up there under the care of my family. When I reached the age of eight, I learned from my parents that we were slaves belonging to a Bidan man (“The Master”).  By the time I turned ten, The Master ordered me—despite my tender age—to herd the sheep in the wilderness and the desert. I was constantly afraid and felt no sense of security, as I was all alone with the flock in the vast, desolate terrain. Whenever I complained of the panic and fear I felt, or refused to venture out into the wilderness with the sheep, this man would bind me with a rope and lash me with a whip to force me to go out and graze the flock. Neither my father, my mother, nor anyone else was able to protect me from the fear, danger, and torture that The Master inflicted upon me. He would beat any one of us slaves mercilessly to compel us to do his bidding. I would leave before sunrise and return at sunset in the evening.\nOne summer evening, after returning from the wilderness, I was playing with the other children. However, to my shock, the very next evening—again after my return from the wilderness—The Master came to our hut. He seized me, bound me, and began to lash me with his whip while I screamed and cried out for help. I insisted that I had completed my work and had done nothing to anger him; yet, he declared that I was forbidden from playing with the other children. He insisted that I must go to bed early so that I could wake up early—alert and ready—to herd the sheep.\nThere was never a day of rest or a holiday—not even during religious festivals—for he would always say that the sheep required grazing every single day.\n When I was eleven years old, we woke up before sunrise to begin our work, only to find that my father was missing. It turned out that he had escaped to an unknown destination. When The Master discovered this, he bound me, my mother, and my siblings with ropes and rained down blows upon us with his whip, screaming and threatening us as he demanded to know where my father had fled—vowing that he would torture him until... ...death would serve as a lesson to the other slaves. Indeed, we truly did not know where my father had fled. After hours of torture and beatings, the master untied our ropes and ordered us to go perform our daily chores; however, he kept my mother bound in front of the hut. He gave strict orders that she be denied food and water, and that she be tortured until she confessed where my father had gone. She remained in this state for two days—tied at the hut’s entrance—yet she truly did not know where he had fled. To this day, we still do not know where my father went; he vanished completely.\nThe Master appointed another man to take my father’s place, tasked with waking us before sunrise to begin our work. If we were slow to rise, this man would beat us with a whip on the master’s behalf.\nThis life of slavery and toil continued until I reached the age of twenty-one. During those years, we heard that the master had killed several people—beating them to death through torture—simply because they had been too slow in their work. One victim was a sick man who was unable to go out to work in the fields; instead of providing him with medical care, the master whipped him to death.\nOne Friday,it was in winter time , I went out to the wilderness to graze the sheep, as was my routine. When I returned to the hut that evening, I could find neither my mother nor my siblings. I knew from the neighbors that my mother and siblings had fled—driven by the torture, abuse, and persecution they endured, and terrified that they, too, would be tortured to death. They had escaped in a direction known to no one.\nI immediately fled into the wilderness myself it was in 2023. I walked throughout the entire night—moving further away, terrified and panic-stricken—searching desperately for my family. After two days of walking and exhaustion, I arrived at a village called […] in 2023. \nThere, I sought refuge with the village elder, a man named Sheikh. After he provided me with food and water, I slept until morning. When I awoke, he asked me to tell him my story; I recounted how I had lost my father and how my mother and siblings had fled the hut.\nSheikh  welcomed me warmly and offered to let me assist him with his farm work. I began working in his fields within the village, and after some time had passed, I asked him if he would teach me how to read and do arithmetic. He agreed, and so it began... He sent me to the village school for three days a week, had me work for three days, and allowed me to rest on Fridays. I quickly learned to read, write, and do arithmetic, as well as speak French.\nA few months later, men sent by The Master  arrived in the village, searching for me and my brothers. They had received intelligence indicating that I was indeed in the village, and they insisted to Sheikh that other people had seen me there under his care. Their objective was to bind me with ropes and drag me back to The Master—so that he could beat and torture me to death, thereby making an example of me for the other slaves working in his fields, on his farms, and tending his flocks. However, Sheikh denied my presence there, fearing for my safety and knowing that my inevitable fate would be torture leading to death.\nSheikh was deeply moved—even weeping—upon learning the full details of my story, for he knew that my ultimate destiny was torture and murder. He urged me to leave the village within a few days, fearing that The Master’s men might return to search for me again. He gathered some of his own money and borrowed additional funds on my behalf; after discussing and deliberating on the matter, we reached a decision: I would leave Mauritania and travel to the United States of America—a place where slavery did not exist, where The Master could never reach me, and where I would be safe. We reasoned that the people of the United States were free and would protect me from persecution, safeguarding my life against the threat of death by torture.\nConsequently, Sheikh—leveraging his network of contacts—expedited the necessary paperwork and secured a passport for me, ensuring I could depart before The Master’s men returned to the village to resume their search.\nHe then booked a flight ticket for me to travel to Nicaragua in 2024 , then from there I travelled  to Honduras, Guatemala ,  and subsequently to Mexico. While in Mexico, I was abducted by a criminal gang on a public highway; they signaled the driver to stop—which he did—and proceeded to kidnap me and the three other passengers traveling in the vehicle at gunpoint. They allowed the driver to leave but took us captive, transporting us to an undisclosed location. Once there, they separated me from the others, took me alone to a house, and confined me in the basement. They then demanded that I contact a relative to negotiate a ransom for my release. \nI began to realize that I didn't have a single phone number memorized—meaning I couldn't contact anyone—and, furthermore, I didn't want the gang to discover how much money I was carrying. So, I retrieved money from my hiding place, handed it over, and told them, \"This is all I have; take it and let me go.\" True to their word, they took the money, escorted me back to the main road, gave me some of the sum back, and left me there.\nI continued my journey toward the border, scaled the fence, and surrendered myself to the U.S. police. I felt an overwhelming sense of relief and security, knowing that I was finally safe—no more torture, no more threats of death. At that moment, I felt like a truly free human being.\nI have since applied for asylum, appealing to the American people—the guardians of human rights principles. I pledge to be a productive member of society and to respect American laws, customs, and traditions, as I seek protection from persecution and from the threat of torture unto
